Happy 5th Birthday, Native Appropriations!

Hey friends, guess what? The Blog is 5! Back in January of 2010* I was a first year graduate student, and now I’m Dr. NativeApprops, and between those two milestones was a lifetime’s worth of learning, growing, finding/refining my voice, and things I could never have even imagined.

I don’t have time for a huge long reflection today, but I’m sure you’ve noticed–things are looking different around here! I finally got a chance to work on some new design elements incorporating my beautiful logo from Victor at DGTL NVJO. I’m also rolling out a new tagline (this is my new FB cover photo):

“Representations Matter”. No more “Examining representations of Native peoples”–because who could say that anyway? I think it sums up pretty well what I hope we’re doing here, and the cause I hope to continue to push moving forward. Be cause representations do matter. In very real and concrete ways.

So that’s it! For a little flashback fun, this is what the blog used to look like 5 years ago on blogspot:

All dark and emo. Things are a little brighter now, I’d say. In more ways then just the blog background. 🙂

The design and backend things on the blog (menus/categories/tags/comments/all sorts of stuff) will continue to be tweaked and shifted, so don’t be surprised in the coming weeks if things keep changing a little bit. It’s all to make it a better experience for you, the awesome fantastic readers.

The other huge milestone to report: The Native Appropriations Facebook page has over 100,000 likes. That blows my mind and I don’t fully know what to do with that information, so I’ll just report it. Ridiculous, right?

Thanks, as always, for being with me on this journey! We’ll reflect/talk more soon.

*Ok technically the blog-o-versary was January 13. But…I didn’t let it go live for a couple weeks? So, it’s still ok?

Happy 5 years! I’ve only just discovered your blog, and I have so enjoyed paging through wonderful post after wonderful post in the last several days. I look forward to many more!

    Congratulations!
I’ve discovered you far more recently but, as I recently commented, as a European student of English & American studies, your blog provided exactly the sort of gateway to contemporary Native culture I needed to get a better idea. Even if all I get to do with it is listening to some music.

Hi, I’m a student at Nottingham Trent university and currently doing a study about cultural appropriation in fashion. I would really appreciate if anyone will fill out my survey for me to get some opinions on the matter. Thanks in advance! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9FTKYFC
